Did you ever work with consultants? They are the guys who give you a glance at their knowledge, tell you what to do, but don’t do it themselves.
In sports, these are called coaches.
Being a coach can be quite a well paid job. But what do you think: In which sports and in which league are coaches paid the best? The highly professionalized US sports? The hyped major soccer leagues?
I checked the list of the 25 highest paid sports coaches in the world. What came as quite a surprise for me was that nine out of the top 10 were soccer coaches. I assume they are not doing a significantly better job than their counterparts in other sports and their teams and their leagues are not necessarily generating more money than those with less paid coaches: The total revenue of the teams in the NFL is pretty much on the same level as in the English Premier League EPL (I have to admit the figure is slightly biased as there are more teams in the NFL than in the EPL) while the NFL is a lot more profitable.
But there’s more surprises: None of the top four paid coaches works in the EPL. And the best paid sports coach in the world works in… tadah … Uzbekistan.
1) When you deal with consultants, the prices they charge may not be in line with the value they bring. Challenge them on this!
2) You can probably get consultants or coaches that do the job in the same quality at a significantly lower price. Take the time and compare packages and prices before hiring.
3) When looking for a new job, don’t count a location out just because of the image you have – there may be some reason for it when you look at it in more detail. Even for Uzbekistan.
And just in case you might wonder: No, I’m not planning to move to Tashkent.
